Odessa Water Tower
Project Overview
The Odessa Water Tower will be undergoing necessary rehabilitation work in April 2023. The rehabilitation project involves the replacement of the interior liner as well as various safety upgrades and exterior renovations. The project was awarded to Landmark Municipal Services and work is scheduled to begin at the end of March.
Landmark Municipal Services has over 40 years of experience in municipal water tower maintenance and water tank repair and inspection services. The new liner, like all other drinking water components, are compliant with NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 regulations.
The tower will be taken out of service from mid- April to mid-June to complete the revitalization of this critical piece of infrastructure. Municipal drinking water in Amherstview, Odessa, Brooklands & Harewood is supplied by the Fairfield Water Treatment Plant in Amherstview. We expect that drinking water customers should see minimal impact during the tower shutdown. Regular seasonal outdoor water use restrictions will be in effect as of May 1. The Township will not impose additional water use restrictions. However, we request that customers in the Fairfield water system please be mindful of water usage throughout the shutdown.

Background
The Odessa Water Tower was constructed in 1978 and provides 900 m³ of water storage to the Fairfield Water Distribution system. An inspection of the tower conducted in November 2021 identified that its interior liner had reached the end of its useful life and was in need of replacement. The same inspection also identified that several other components of the tower needed to be replaced, such as the exterior access ladder and various safety equipment, or repaired, such as access hatches. These findings, along with a least one observable leak thought to be originating from the tower’s interior liner, led staff to recommend that the rehabilitation of the Odessa water tower be scheduled for the spring or summer of 2023.
Water conservation tips
- Collect running water from your shower while you wait for it to get hot.
Over 10% of the water drawn from showering is wasted waiting for hot water to arrive. Collecting this excess of water in a bucket and use it for watering the plants, washing the car or floor, flushing the toilet, or filling the dog's water bowl.
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands.
Turning off the water while brushing your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day, can save you up to 8 gallons of water per day.
- Run full loads.
Full loads in thew washing machine instead of half loads can save 3,400 gallons of water annually.
- Take quick showers rather than baths.
A full bath may use up to 70 gallons of water. Short showers can cut up to 45 gallons.
- Store a pitcher of water in your fridge.
You can save litres of water by getting a cold glass of water from the fridge instead of letting the water run.
