Rainbow Crosswalk Inspired by Students Painted on Main St. in Odessa

A new rainbow crosswalk was painted across Main Street in front of Odessa Public School, a project that traces its roots back to the creativity of local students.

This project was initiated several years ago by students in the Odessa Public School Challenge Program through the Imagining My Sustainable Community project, led by No. 9, a local organization of professional architects, artists, and designers. Students were asked to imagine what their community could look like if it were more sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant. From reading gardens to public art, they developed a wide range of ideas for the future of Odessa.

Loyalist Township has continued to listen to and act on those student voices, often incorporating them into construction or improvement projects. One notable example is the Babcock Mill Reading Garden, which has become a gathering place for learning and community.

The rainbow crosswalk is another tangible outcome of this student-led vision. Beyond improving pedestrian safety, it stands as a visible symbol of inclusion, pride, and the important role that youth play in shaping the future of their community.
