What is an excavation permit?

An excavation permit allows you to do construction within the public right of way of Township roads, including the roadway itself or on the Township's section of the roadside. This includes receiving heavy loads such as access for pool construction or reconstruction of a driveway or potentially repairs to an underground utility servicing your property.

When might I need to get an excavation permit?

If you plan to do any construction work that will affect the road or the Township road allowance. Our excavation by-law defines construction work:

“Construction” includes erecting, altering, repairing, maintaining, painting, dismantling or demolishing any building or structure, and moving, land clearing, grubbing, tree removal, earth moving, grading, excavating, operating any construction equipment, blasting and detonation of explosive devices other than fireworks, the laying of pipe and conduit whether above or below ground level, highway and highway building, concreting, equipment installation and alteration, and the structural installation of construction components and materials in any form or for any purpose, and includes any associated or related work.

What is required to get approved for an excavation permit?

By-law 2012-010, the Excavation By-law, requires the following items in order to be considered for an excavation permit:

  • Fill out the excavation permit application form
  • Provide a plan or drawing showing where the work will be done and what structures, if any, are planned to remain in the right of way
  • Submit a traffic plan for work in the roadway or road allowance
  • Pay the application fee of $200 and the damage deposit of $3,000
  • Provide proof of insurance in the amount of $2,000,000 liability. If you have a contractor doing the work for you, the contractor may provide the certificate of liability insurance

After we have reviewed the application, we may have additional requirements which will depend on the type of work being done. If you have questions about the permit before applying, please call 613-386-7351, ext. 116 to discuss.
