Snow Removal
Winter Snow Removal and Plowing Practices
It's our policy to meet the Province's Minimum Maintenance Standards for roadways. These standards don't apply to sidewalks.
Weekdays
- We have snow removal crews on mainland roads between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. as needed.
- We clean sidewalks, boulevards, and very low traffic roads during the regular working hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Minimal snowplowing of roads and sidewalks will occur outside the hours of operation described above.
Weekends
On Saturdays, Sundays, and statutory holidays, we will adjust the level of snow plowing effort based on the event, while still continuing to meet the provincial standards.
Amherst Island
On Amherst Island, the hours of operation have been adjusted so that the Minimum Maintenance Standards can be maintained. This may result in a reduced level of service during long periods of blowing snow or when there are successive snowfalls occurring over several days.
Significant Weather Events
An Ontario municipality can declare a significant weather event when a weather hazard is approaching or occurring and has the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the highways in which they have authority over.
This declaration suspends the standard timelines required for municipalities to meet their winter maintenance objectives until the municipality declares the significant weather event has ended.
A significant weather event can occur when the forecasted or present weather conditions includes one or more of the following conditions:
- Significant snow accumulation during a 24-hour period
- Ice formation that occurs without warning from the weather forecast
- High winds leading to blowing snow and large snow drifts
- Freezing temperatures when de-icing operations will not be effective
In the event of a significant weather event, please check the following outlets for official information from Loyalist Township:
- The Loyalist Township website
- The Township's Facebook page
- The Township's Twitter page
For further information on the declaration of significant weather events, review the Ontario Regulation 239/02.
See snow, go slow!
If the road is covered with snow or ice, please drive safely and reduce your speed.
