Amherst Islander II ferry boat

Loyalist Township, in partnership with The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is excited to share an update which outlines the current plan that will allow the new state-of-the-art Amherst Islander II to begin service in spring 2023.

In the coming weeks you may notice the new vessel in the water around Amherst Island or at the ferry docks as staff begin training in accordance with Transport Canada regulations. Testing will also be conducted to ensure the vessel is ready to be put into service.

To maintain consistent service for the travelling public, regular operation of the Frontenac II will continue while training and testing is being completed on the Amherst Islander II. A temporary staffing agency has been retained to support Amherst Island Ferry operations while training of Loyalist Township Ferry staff is being completed on the new vessel. Although temporary staff will be operating the Frontenac II during training, Loyalist Township Ferry staff will continue to be responsible for onboard fare collection. Your patience during this transition is greatly appreciated.

As training and testing progresses, consistent communications will be provided to residents and the travelling public, via the Loyalist Township website. You can also follow the Amherst Island Ferry Service on Twitter for the latest ferry service updates.
