Loyalist Township will be hosting an E-Waste, Battery & Textile Drive at the Amherstview Fire Station on Saturday, April 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to help encourage responsible recycling and celebrate Earth Day! In previous years, the drive was limited to e-waste and batteries, but this year Loyalist Township has partnered with Diabetes Canada to reduce textile waste from going to landfill!

Residents wishing to recycle responsibly can swing by the Amherstview Fire Station, located at 363 Amherst Drive, on April 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with their e-waste, old batteries and clean textiles that have been collecting dust around the house. A full list of acceptable materials can be found on the Earth Day webpage.

Electronic waste including old cellular devices and computer peripherals, are among the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide, containing hazardous materials that can harm the environment and human health if not disposed of correctly. Proceeds from e-waste recycling directly benefit the Loyalist community through fire training and education programs.

The average person throws away 37 kg of textiles per year – the majority of which could be reused or repurposed, but instead, ends up in landfills. Textiles can include clothing, curtains, towels, blankets, sheets, and footwear. Textile donations will be collected by Diabetes Canada at the end of the collection event, with textile net proceeds supporting diabetes research, D-camps and more.

“We are pleased to partner with Loyalist Township to help reduce waste and increase recycling options for the residents”, said Simon Langer, National Manager, Government and Strategic Partnerships, National Diabetes Trust. “This is a great way for people to give back to their community, and we are so proud to be expanding our support of those living with diabetes through our collective efforts.”

For those unable to attend on April 20th, the Earth Day webpage provides links to other disposal service resources that Township residents have access to, as well as other environmental, sustainability and climate action initiatives.
