Electric Zamboni on arena surface

On January 18th, 2022, Loyalist Township accepted delivery of a new electric Zamboni that will operate at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre. Township staff are undergoing training on the electric Zamboni with plans to bring the Zamboni into service once provincial restrictions are lifted.

This purchase of an emission-free Zamboni supports the ResiLienT Loyalist Township Climate Action Plan and the Township’s goal to reduce corporate emissions by 49 percent of 2016 levels by 2031.

The ResiLienT Loyalist Township Climate Action Plan was unanimously passed by Loyalist Township Council on February 8th, 2021. The Climate Action Plan acts as a road map for keeping climate action as a priority for decisions. The purchase of this Zamboni model 450 directly supports the following Climate Action Plan goals:

  • Electrifying the municipal fleet while maintaining existing levels of service

  • Reduce energy usage in municipal facilities through operations changes and renewal decisions

  • Incorporating sustainability into corporate procurement and incorporating environmental impact and lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emission criteria into procurement decisions

Operationally, the electric Zamboni will result in significant savings in fuel and maintenance costs . The switch from a fuel to electric resurfacer will result in an estimated savings of 19 tons of GHG emissions on an annual basis. Additionally, using electric ice resurfacers is the most effective method for improving and maintaining low levels of air pollution in ice arenas.

“Being a municipal leader in climate action is an objective that Loyalist Township Council has prioritized through the Strategic Plan,” said Loyalist Township Mayor, Ric Bresee. “This state-of-the-art Zamboni will help the Township progress towards our Climate Action goals while ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our staff and guests all while saving operational costs,” Bresee added.
