Loyalist Township does not require businesses, home-based or operating a brick-and-mortar location, to purchase a license to conduct business. We encourage you to consult with the Planning division before opening a business to ensure that the proposed business and its location comply with the Township's zoning by-law.

The Government of Ontario recognizes the need for practical guidance and tools to plan for a successful business transition. Succession Ontario is an online planning hub designed to help small businesses plan for the future of their business.
The website breaks down actionable steps for planning a business transition, such as creating a roadmap (3–5 year horizon), understanding business valuation, assembling a transition team, and preparing financials. It also outlines the main ways business owners can exit or transition their company, including:
- Intergenerational transfer (keeping the business in the family)
- Selling to employees or management (including Employee Ownership Trusts)
- Asset liquidation (appropriate for asset-rich companies)
- Selling to a third party (external buyers)
A resource library is available that includes a central hub of tools, videos, guides, and educational materials designed for self-paced learning to understand succession planning concepts and next steps.
