Commemorative Street Naming Program

Commemorative Street Naming Nominations Are Now Open!

Street naming in Loyalist Township is governed by the Road Naming By-law 2020-070. Street names contribute to Loyalist’s cultural identity, ease of navigation, and efficient emergency response.

Loyalist Township’s Commemorative Street Naming program provides residents an opportunity to recognize influential aspects of the Township’s history.

The assignment of a Commemorative Street Name, if approved, will be added to the Township's Road Registry as an option for future developments. The Commemorative Street Naming Program will provide a visible reminder of noteworthy people, places, events, themes, cultures, etc. related to Loyalist Township.

The program is designed to:

  • commemorate person(s) associated with the Loyalist Township;
  • commemorate local history, organizations, places, events or culture;
  • strengthen neighbourhood identity and community commitment; and
  • recognize native wildlife, flora, fauna or natural features related to the community and Loyalist Township.

You can view the Township's Road Register for reference of current road names within Loyalist Township.

Any proposed road names must comply with one of the following categories:

  • Names that recognize individuals, families or businesses that have made a significant historic contribution to the Township.
  • Names that recognize local history such as events, land uses, cultural landscapes (aboriginal, pioneer, United Empire Loyalists, etc.) relative to the Township and/or the County.
  • Names that recognize prominent elected officials of the Township.
  • Names that acknowledge the Township’s heritage resources, including heritage buildings, structures, sites, natural features, local geography and landscapes.
  • Names that commemorate war veterans from the Township.
  • Names that recognize local citizens and organizations who have had substantial international standing in their chosen discipline or who have made a significant contribution to the community at a provincial or national level.

Any Commemorative Road Naming nominations that fall outside of one of these categories will not be considered by Council.

Complete the Commemorative Street Naming nomination. If you require the form in an alternative method, please contact clerk@loyalist.ca

Nominations will be open until December 31, 2025.

Once the intake period closes on December 31, 2025, relevant Township staff and stakeholders will review the nominations and compare them with current municipal addressing guidelines. The nominations are then prepared to be added to a future Council agenda for consideration.

Council will consider nominations at the relevant Council meeting and make a decision to approve or deny.

Upon approval by Council the nominator will be notified of Council's decision and if approved, the road name will be added to the Township's Road Registry for future use.
