Community Cleanup | Loyalist Township

Loyalist Township is hosting a week‑long Community Cleanup initiative during Earth Week 2026, encouraging residents to actively participate in removing litter and debris from public spaces across the Township. The program supports environmental stewardship, community pride, and civic engagement while offering flexible participation opportunities for residents of all ages.

Registration Period: Tuesday, April 7 to Saturday, April 25
Cleanup Period: Sunday, April 19 to Saturday, April 25 (Earth Week)
Participation Timing: Self-directed; residents may participate anytime during Earth Week

How to Participate

Registration opens Tuesday, April 7

Residents are highly encouraged to register so the Township can effectively collect full garbage bags throughout the community.

Please register in advance, either online or with hard‑copy forms available at supply pick up locations.

One registration form is required per individual or group.
Registration collects group size, contact information, and intended cleanup area.
Contact information is used for event follow‑up and optional entry into a draw for a free community tree.

Pick up your uniquely branded Community Cleanup garbage bags and gloves. Cleanup supplies will be available for pick up from April 7 to 24.

Between Sunday, April 19 and Saturday, April 25, head out and start cleaning up our community!

Once you’ve finished collecting litter, tie up your branded cleanup garbage bags and dispose of them at one of the following locations:

Place them in or beside a Loyalist Township public garbage receptacle at a public park or bus shelter
You can place Community Cleanup bags at the curb for collection with your regular garbage. No garbage tags are required on Community Cleanup bags; however, only branded Community Cleanup bags will be collected by our contractor. Curbside collection will occur on your regular collection schedule between April 21 and 30.
If you are an Amherst Island resident—drop them off at the Amherst Island landfill.
If you are unable to leave your community cleanup garbage bags out for disposal as indicated above, please contact events@loyalist.ca

Cleanup Safety Tips

Weather Awareness: Dress appropriately for rain, snow, or wind. Avoid water-filled areas such as ditches, streams, or ponds. Be extra cautious in areas where there could be water or ice.

Visibility: Wear brightly coloured clothing only. Clean ups should happen during daylight hours and not take place after sunset or before sunrise.

Boundaries: Stay off private property and roadways.

Environment: Be careful of wild animals, insects, hives and nests, and noxious weeds such as poison ivy and giant hogweed.

Hazardous Objects: If you come across any hazardous objects such as broken glass, sharp objects, or dead animals, please do not pick them up. Instead, report them at the Loyalist Township Report-A-Concern webpage, or call, 613-386-7351.

Personal Safety:
- Children must be supervised.
- Gloves should be worn at all times when cleaning up.
- Avoid touching your face and wash your hands immediately after cleanup.
-Be mindful of unstable or slippery ground.

What if I come across a hazardous object while picking up litter?

If you come across any hazardous objects such as broken glass, sharp objects, or dead animals, please do not pick them up. Instead, report them at the Loyalist Township Report-A-Concern webpage, or call, 613-386-7351.

Can I use my own garbage bags?

We ask that all participants use the unique garbage bags available for pickup, allowing us to track how much garbage is collected. Non-branded garbage bags will not be collected and will still require a garbage tag.

I forgot to register, can I still participate in the event?

Registration is strongly encouraged so Township staff can prepare for the event. Resident can still participate if they do not register online.

Are there other Community Cleanups happening during Earth Week?

Yes! Participate in the annual Spring, Bath Community Cleanup hosted by Free Flow Petroleum!
