Livestock Claims

If you have livestock and/or poultry that has been killed or injured due to certain animal predators, you are entitled to seek compensation under the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program

Livestock and poultry producers can make claims through their local municipality to try and recoup losses.

To be eligible for the program, you must meet the eligibility criteria

  • Livestock owners inform a Municipally Appointed Livestock Investigator/Valuator within 48 hours of discovery if predation is believed to be the cause of damage or loss. Please call the Township office at 613-386-7351 or see list below for a list of Valuators.
  • Investigator documents evidence and completes application forms
  • Completed application is submitted to the municipality by the investigator
  • Municipality submits the completed application to OMAFRA
  • OMAFRA reviews the application for completeness and eligibility, within 30 days of receipt
  • Owner has 20 business days to appeal outcome of the application
  • If no appeal is requested within 20 business days of the decision letter being issued, OMAFRA will notify the municipality to process payment
  • OMAFRA will provide reimbursement to municipalities equal to the value assigned in the decision letter. Additional compensation will be provided to the municipalities to assist with administrative costs associated with the program.

The Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program (OWDCP) provides financial assistance to producers whose livestock, poultry or honey bees have been damaged or killed by wildlife. The following helpful information about OWDCP is available on the OMAFRA website:

  • Preventing Losses to Predators (Fencing Options, Management Practices, Living with Wolves, Predation Tools)
  • Dealing with Deadstock
  • Reducing and Managing Conflict
  • Compensation Program Guidelines

If the Valuer determines that the damage to livestock and poultry was caused by a stray dog that is not normally found on the premises, the claimant is not eligible for compensation through this program. Instead, the process set out in the Protection of Livestock and Poultry from Dogs Act should be followed.
