Large items

Curbside collection is not offered for large items. 

Consider these options:

  1. Donate: If the large item is in good working condition, consider donating it to a charity. Please contact them ahead of time to see if your item will be accepted. Possible charities include:
  2. Giveaway Days: Loyalist Township hosts Giveaway Days when residents can place items on the curb for people to take. 
  3. Drop off at the landfill: Both Violet Waste Disposal Site and Amherst Island Disposal Site accept some large items for drop off. Each household is entitled to two Free Large Item Drop Offs (FLIDOs) per calendar year. See below for more information.

Free Large Item Disposal Opportunity (FLIDO)

Each household is entitled to two FLIDOs per calendar year. 

What large items are accepted?

  • indoor furniture (couches, chairs, tables, mattresses, home office furniture)
  • area rugs
  • mattresses and box springs
  • bathroom toilets and sinks 
  • large appliances like refrigerators, freezers, dish washers, ovens, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners

All other items are considered household garbage and tipping fees will apply to disposal.

  • construction and renovation material, including cabinetry, doors, windows, fencing, drywall
  • vinyl products of any kind
  • tires: use the RPRA Where to Recycle map to find drop off sites
  • household garbage: this either needs to be bagged and tagged, or tipping fees will apply

Simply take your qualifying large items to the landfill for disposal.  Make sure that you have documentation with you that indicates you are a resident of Loyalist Township (Photo ID, tax bill) The landfill attendant will guide you through the disposal process.

Once you have used both your opportunities for the year, regular disposal fees will apply. The current tipping fee is $125/tonne, with a $15 minimum charge per visit. Household garbage does not qualify for FLIDO. Household garbage that has not been bagged and tagged will be subject to tipping fees as mentioned in the Fees and Charges By-Law. 

Yes! If someone is delivering large items on your behalf, you must first either visit in person or call the Loyalist Township Office (ext 116) to obtain an approval number that authorizes the landfill to accept the FLIDO on your behalf.
