Traffic calming

Loyalist Township is committed to improving road safety and livability in residential and high-density areas. Our Traffic Calming Program uses a combination of engineering tools, data collection, and public awareness measures to encourage safer driving behaviour and reduce vehicle speeds.

Traffic calming focuses on driver awareness and voluntary compliance, particularly in areas where residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users are present.

Digital speed radar program

As part of the Traffic Calming Program, Loyalist Township uses digital speed radar units to remind drivers of their current speed and encourage them to slow down.

These devices are designed to:

  • Increase driver awareness of posted speed limits
  • Reduce speeding through real-time feedback
  • Improve safety in residential and high-traffic areas

The units do not issue tickets or record personal information and are used strictly as a traffic safety and education tool.

Frequently asked questions

The radar signs collect anonymous traffic data such as:

  • Vehicle speeds
  • Traffic volumes
  • Time-of-day and day-of-week trends

This data helps the Township better understand traffic behaviour and safety concerns.

Speed radar units are placed based on a review of:

  • Road classification and traffic volumes
  • Speed data and collision history
  • Proximity to schools, parks, and residential areas
  • Community concerns and service requests
  • Engineering judgement and available resources

Due to limited equipment, not all requests can be accommodated immediately, and locations are prioritized based on overall safety benefit.

No. The radar signs do not issue tickets, do not record license plates and are not an enforcement tool. They are used strictly for education, awareness, and data collection. All data collected is anonymous.

In 2025 we started a pilot program, installing multiple physical measures on Amherst Drive to improve safety for everyone who uses the municipal right-of-way, both motorists and those who use active modes of transportation, such as walking or cycling.
