Safety of float/entries/participants
|
- All participants are responsible for ensuring that the design and operation of their entry is safe and reliable. Safety of participants and the general public is a top priority. Safety is the ultimate responsibility of each individual entry.
- Entrants must always obey all applicable provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. Parade registration does not convey any special privileges or rights to exempt any portion of the Act. Anyone driving a vehicle in the parade must have a valid driver's license.
- Participants should not be transported on open roads to/from the parade on any motorized vehicle, trailer, etc.
- Participants are not permitted to sit on the edge of a float trailer with their feet dangling over the sides. Participants are to be seated on entries while the vehicle is in motion. It is strongly recommended that children be securely seated and supervised.
- Children under the age of 12 who are participating in the parade must be accompanied by an adult.
- Children under the age of 18 who are riding bicycles in the parade are required to wear a helmet as per Ontario's Guide to Safe Cycling.
- Entries must always maintain a forward motion unless they are asked to stop by a Parade Marshal, or if an emergency stop is required. All entries must keep pace with the parade to prevent gaps between entries and ensure the parade is finished on time so roads can be reopened to traffic.
- It is recommended that floats have a point duty comprising four people - two at the front and two at the rear to ensure spectators do not approach the float.
- Participants are not permitted to throw or toss any objects from a float into the crowd, including candies and coupons. Breach of this rule will result in immediate expulsion.
- Alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs are forbidden on any parade entry. Any participant suspected to be under the influence will be removed from the parade.
- All animals must be on a leash and the entrant is required to have a clean-up/pooper scooper crew following behind.
|
Design and decoration
|
- It is recommended that decorative materials be flame retardant.
- Floats with a generator must be equipped with a tagged fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
- All parade entries and participants are encouraged to decorate in red and white, including the motorized vehicles and trailers.
|
Parade staging |
- Entries with motorized vehicles should arrive at the staging area between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
- Riders/participants are not permitted to ride on the floats while on open roads and in transit to/from the staging area.
- Riders will only be allowed to ride on their floats from the staging area, along the parade route, to the end of the parade route.
- Once the entrant has reached the end of the parade route, all riders must get off the float. The only people left with the float should be the driver and passengers with seatbelts.
- All float riders should make arrangements beforehand to have someone collect them in the vicinity of the de-staging area.
- All drivers of motorized vehicles should remain with their vehicles in the staging/de-staging areas as they may be required to move them at a moment's notice.
- All floats will be assigned a float number. The number will be affixed on the driver's side of the windshield so officials can identify the float. It is not removed until the end of the parade.
- Any entry may be refused at any time up until the parade start if it does not meet these guidelines or differs from its approved entry form.
|
Parade Marshals |
- Marshals will be in orange reflective vests.
- Parade entrants must obey the instructions from the Parade Marshals and their officials. Failure to comply may result in removal from the parade and may jeopardize future participation in the parade.
- Parade Marshals have the right to remove any individual if they have concerns about safety or interference with the parade.
|
Water Advisory |
- Parade spectators have a long-standing tradition of spraying parade floats and participants with water along the route. In 2019, the Planning Committee developed (to the best of their ability) a NO WATER, PLEASE tactic to help prevent people from being sprayed if they didn't want to get wet.
- If you do not want to be sprayed, NO WATER, PLEASE signs will be available at the staging area and can be attached to either side of your float or car, etc.
- Loyalist Township, staff and the volunteer Planning Committee cannot guarantee that floats/cars with NO WATER PLEASE signs will not get wet.
- We advise all parade participants to be aware of this longstanding community tradition and plan accordingly!
- Parade participants are not permitted to spray spectators with water.
